Engineer and Draftsman Intern

We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented intern to join our Engineering and Drafting team for a hands-on internship in steel bridge fabrication. You'll rotate through engineering and drafting, building a real understanding of how a bridge moves from drawings to finished steel, while contributing to live projects alongside experienced engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.
This is a mentored, hands-on internship: you'll start by observing and learning the fundamentals, then move into supporting real project work alongside engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tour the fabrication shop and observe CNC machines, drills, saws, and shop workflow
Learn key industry terminology: floor beam, stringer, truss, connection, splice, cope and more
Meet with Engineering and Drafting to learn how plans become detailed shop drawings
Gain an overview of the full project lifecycle, from bid proposal through fabrication and shipping
Review shop drawings against contract documents to identify and list key components
Assist drafters with releasing shop drawings and related documentation
Support engineers with routine calculations and checks (bolt counts, paint area, pay weight summaries)
Sit in on project meetings, take notes, and help organize project documentation
Spend time in the shop connecting drawings to physical steel and learning basic weld symbols
Track one or two active projects as a supporting team member through detailing and fabrication
Maintain an ongoing “New Hire Notes” journal documenting resources and processes learned
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field
Strong attention to detail, in engineering, accuracy is safety
Proactive and curious; comfortable asking questions and seeking to understand the “why” behind tasks
Genuine interest in structural steel fabrication and the bridge industry
Willingness to spend time on the shop floor as well as at a desk
Strong communication skills and comfort working across departments
